First Church celebrates the Motherhood of all Women, this Sunday.

A weekly e-newsletter of First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn:

THIS SUNDAY, May 10:

This Sunday, Rev. Beth Waltemath, preaches on Psalm 23, "The Lord is My Mother."  Jami Jackson performs an original song, "Keep Walkin' On" in honor of the choir's participation in AIDSWALKNYC.  First Church celebrates all its women by the giving of origami flowers created to honor our connection with the Church of Gethesemane in Park Slope and to mark the unique trials of mothers facing prison.  The Children's Church offering is dedicated to Human Right's Watch, Women's Division, in honor of each of our mothers and mothers around the world.

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The 10 o' Clock Hour will continue with a discussion of "Ruth" with David Mullé, leader.

Position Open on the Church Wide Nominating Committee

The Church Wide Nominating Committee seeks to replace one member of the committee, Edna Askes, who is now Co-Clerk of Session.  Please contact any committee member listed below to express your interest in serving on this committee.  The description of the role and work of the committee is as follows:

The members of the Church Wide Nominating Committee are elected by the congregation.   They must be members of the church and cannot be current members of session.

The committee thoughtfully and deliberately considers members of the congregation to serve in two possible areas:  as elders on the session or as members of the Pastoral Nominating Committee.  The committee proposes elders or PNC members so that the resulting body will reflect the diversity of gender, ethnicity, and age of our congregation. The committee talks with any of the members of the congregation who express interest or who are suggested by other members and then proposes a candidate or slate for  vote by the congregation.

Current committee members: Jon Abernathy, Chair, Bernice Adorno, Nate Dudley, Marta Nelson

The congregational meeting to elect the member of the Church Wide Nominating Committee will be May 31, 2009.   Please let one of these committee members know of your interest by May 24th.

Formation of New PNC

The Church-Wide Nominating Committee seeks expressions of interest from congregation members interested in serving on the new Pastoral Nominating Committee.   The Committee has a position description for potential committee members; it will be distributed by e-mail, and hard copies will be in the Narthex starting Sunday May 10.. The description will be sent to members by mail as well.  Please prayerfully consider service on this very important committee.   Interested members should submit a one-page statement of interest detailing (1) the history of your involvement in the church, (2) why you are interested in being a part of the PNC, and (3) what you believe you could contribute to the PNC.   This statement should be no more than one page, and may or may not be typed. Deadline for statements:  June 7, 2009.  Statements may be emailed to fpcpnc@aol.com or sent to the Church office, c/o Jon Abernethy, chair of Church Wide Nominating Committee.
