This Week At FPC: Continuing the Sacred Conversation

A weekly e-newsletter of First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn:

A note from Rev. Cari:

Thanks to the Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC). Please join me in expressing deep gratitude to PNC members— Ardythe Williams Mitchell (co-chair), Larry Picard (co-chair), Mario Adorno, Uda Bradford, Chester Lee, Keren Murumba, Ellen Oler, and Dick Turmail—for their tireless efforts for a year-and-a-half on behalf of this church. Please keep them in your prayers as they recover from the difficult challenge that they have had. I am confident that the service they have given to First Church will only be fully understood and appreciated in the months and years to come.

Love and thanks, Rev. Cari

THIS SUNDAY, April 26:

Worship Service, 11 a.m. our Interim Senior Pastor, Dr. Cari Jackson will preach a sermon titled "With Head and Heart." The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The 10 o' Clock Hour will continue with a discussion of "Tools for Bible Study" with David Mullé, leader.

Sacred Conversations will immediately follow worship in the Elliott Room.  A light lunch will be provided, while we talk about how to continue moving forward as an intentionally diverse and multicultural congregation. Facilitated by Rev. Cari and the Many Mansions Ministry. For more details, contact Barry Ford at bford@usta.org or Emily Thomas at thomas@igc.org.

Other News:

Session Meeting. Thursday, April 30 at 7p.m. in the Manse.

Farewell to Rev. Cari. Sunday, May 3, is Rev. Cari's last Sunday as our Interim Pastor. There are three ways to express your appreciation for her ministry with us: (1) Open House, come by on Friday, May 1 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Manse, (2) Farewell Reception on Sunday, May 3 immediately following worship service, and (3) An Appreciation Journal located in the Narthex to write notes or tuck in photographs for Rev. Cari. It's hard to let her go, but these events will allow us to celebrate contributing how much Cari means to us and how she has helped shape our lives and faith.

Continuation of Pastoral Search Process. Watch for information from the Church-Wide Nominating Committee (CWNC) about the formation of a new Pastoral Nominating Committee. Also watch for information about opportunities to give your input about your vision of the church and what you are seeking in a pastor. This will not be a re-doing of the Mission Review, but a fine-tuning in light of the additional insights gained through this first leg of the pastoral search to guide the work of the new PNC.

STEPPING UP to SERVE and LEAD.  Please consider how you can heal and affirm the work of the church community and to reach out in love to each other and the world through volunteering your time in the coming months as we begin a new phase of transition.  We have many ministries that need organizers, regular and occasional volunteers.  We will be sending a dedicated email about volunteer opportunities and contact information of their organizers next week.  Sign up as soon as you can and face our challenge and the Spirit's calling of us into greater authenticity as a community of faith with the act of love for "love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." (1 Cor. 13:7).

Living with Loss and Change Support Group. 4 consecutive Tuesdays, May 5-May 26, 6:30-8p.m, Thurman Room. A reflective, relaxing and healing environment to witness and guide you through any loss or change that calls for clarity and resolution. Optional donation accepted. Call Rev. Charles Monaco at (718) 647-5479 to register.

SAVE THE DATE: On Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm First Church will host a luncheon in honor of and appreciation for all who have volunteered their time, treasures, and talents in support of the youth of First Church.
