FPC Weekly E-Newsletter

THIS SATURDAY:

Women's One-Day Retreat: Learning to Live with Your Power: Painful or Joy-Filled. From 9 a.m. to 6. p.m., in the Elliott Room

The retreat will be facilitated by spiritual director Joy Carol, and will focus on Marianne Williamson's words: "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us." The $60 registration fee includes meals and retreat materials. Scholarships are available, and child care is available for a small fee. THIS SUNDAY:

On Oct. 26 at 11 a.m., Interim Pastor Rev. Cari Jackson will preach a sermon titled "Something Left to Love."

 

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Patty and Cristina.  Children's Church will take place in the gym after the Passing of the Peace in the Worship Service.

 

The 10 o'Clock Hour will resume with a discussion of "History of Religion and Politics in America."  (A full list of topics can be found on the church bulletin board and the website calendar.) Led by David Mulle.

 

The Cuba White Rose Ministry will hold fundraising dinner after the Worship Service in the Elliott Room. Share fantastic food and fellowship while helping to support food programs in Cuba.

 

Circle of Wisdom will meet at 1 p.m. to explore questions including how to reach the power of your spiritual wisdoms to guide you in school, work, and relationships. Led by Harriette Mandeville, this group is especially for emerging adults, ages 18-25, but people of all ages are welcome.

 

Communicating with Children workshop, led by Tanya Hill, will meet in the Thurman Room from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to discuss discipline alternatives. Childcare is available.  (Volunteers, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, as well as parents, are welcome.)

 

An Evening of Macabre Masterpieces: "Organ on Henry" Music Series, Sunday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., in the Sanctuary. Join organists Wil Smith and Meghann Wilhoite for an evening of creepy classics. Works by several dearly departed composers, including Buxtehude, Bach, Brahms, and Messiaen, will be performed, along with a few pieces from among the living (for now), including Arvo Pärt and Wil Smith. Embrace the spine-chilling sound of the organ in our beautiful, possibly-haunted, Gothic sanctuary.

From the Scary to the Sublime. Friday, Oct 31 at 7:30 p.m. Younger adults (18-25 year olds), join us for an evening touring through the scary places into the sublime. Watch for the chilling details.

 

Men's Breakfast. Every Wednesday at 7.30 a.m. at the Park Plaza Diner on Cadman Plaza. In October, the group will focus on the book, Epic: The Story God is Telling, by John Eldredge.  For more information contact Jim Cummings, (917) 416-3018 or jcummings@showfab.com.

 

Children's Church invites new volunteers to participate in its worship and classes, especially for any of the months of December through June.  We welcome five volunteers each month to shepherd our youngest members in God's love for us and the world.  Please contact Rev. Memorial Service for Bruce Owen, husband of Linda Kolts, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 in the Sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made online to www.touchingtinylives.org or by check payable to First Presbyterian Church and with "TTL" in the memo line.

The 10 o'Clock Hour is canceled for this Sunday, and will resume on Sunday, Oct. 19 with a discussion of  "What Do Presbyterians Believe?"  (A full list of topics can be found on the church bulletin board and the website calendar.)

 

Circle of Wisdom will meet at 1 p.m. to explore questions including how to connect with your spiritual self in school, work, and relationships. The group, led by Harriette Mandeville, was organized to serve emerging adults, ages 18-25, but people of all ages are welcome.

 

The Communicating with Children workshop also will not meet on this Sunday (Columbus Day weekend.)

Cari will lead a discussion of the spiritual issues present in the current economic crisis and the presidential race as part of our weekly Midweek Boost at 7 p.m. Then join us for the Presidential Debate Potluck Party, at 8 p.m. (The debate begins at 9 p.m.) Everybody is welcome; bring a friend! Come to the church manse at 128 Henry St. at 7, 8, or 9 p.m.

FPC Weekly E-Newsletter

THIS SUNDAY:

On Oct. 5 at 11 a.m., at a service celebrating Holy Communion, Westina Matthews will preach a sermon titled "Faith In the Wilderness." Matthews, a managing director on Wall Street, is a recent graduate of The Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation and the author of three inspirational books.

 

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Patty and Cristina.  Sunday School and Children's Church takes place in the gym after the Passing of the Peace in the Worship Service. Confirmands and Youth Mentors will sit together during Worship Service and meet after the service.

 

The 10 o'Clock Hour discussion topic is "Meet John Calvin." (A full list of topics can be found on the church bulletin board and the website calendar.)

 

Westina Matthews's CD "Have A Little Faith ...The Faith of A Mustard Seed," based on her first book and featuring the First Church choir, will be available for purchase after Sunday's worship service. Ten percent of proceeds of all CD sales go to our music ministry.
