Summer is a great time to get involved.  Look below for ways to do so and make sure to follow up with the committee chairs you met in service two weeks ago!

The First Words of the Church

An introduction to the New Testament is underway at the Ten O'Clock Hour.  You may have learned the order of these books of the Bible in Sunday School —Matthew, Mark, Luke and so forth—but the story behind their composition offers a very different kind of order and meaning.   Who wrote?  What were their sources?  Whom did they write for?  As with his survey of the Old Testament, Rev. Phelps will aim to make each session stand by itself, so you may come to one, or come to all.  Rev. Phelps' introduction to the New Testament at the Ten O'Clock Hour will consider books of the New Testament in this manner:

June  6      Letters of Paul: Galatians, Romans, Philippians

June 13     Gospel of John and the Letters of John

June 20     Pastoral epistles

June 27     Revelation

Midweek Boost, Wednesday May 26th at 7:00 p.m. Thurman Room

Join Midweek Boost for a screening of the documentary "Pray the Devil Back to Hell". This acclaimed film won Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival as well as many other film festival accolades.  Recently the film was screened at the UN Headquarters in Geneva and was mentioned by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her speech at the 58th National Prayer Breakfast.
Pray the Devil Back to Hell chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country.
Thousands of women — ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim — came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country's civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about a agreement during the stalled peace talks.
A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations. For more information contact Linda Kolts, 718-855-1206

New boxes can be created very easily.  Church projects—especially those aimed to serve or connect with people outside the church—can benefit when the public has a simple handle for them.  For example, the email address for a children's Shakespeare theater program  at First Church in July has been created at ssteps@firstchurchbrooklyn.org. If you think a box would help your church work, please call the church office to have one set up.

Emails sent to the old AOL addresses will be maintained through May so that nothing is missed.  But why not change your address book now, while it's on your mind?

THIS SUNDAY May 9, 2010

11:00 a.m. Worship Service: Rev. Stephen H. Phelps will deliver the sermon "Every Mother's Son"

Printed copies of Rev. Phelps' recent sermons are on the table in the Narthex (Henry Street Foyer) and are also posted on-line in text and audio formats at www.shphelps.com.

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Christina and Patty.

10 O'clock Hour

Rev. Phelps will offer an introduction to the New Testament at the Ten O'Clock Hour. The first session: Historical Overview; Gospel of Mark is scheduled for this coming Sunday in the Thurman Room at 10:00 a.m.  (See below for more detail on the subject matter of further sessions.)

Housing request: Jenny Gage's totally excellent niece Meredith, currently a junior at the University of Chicago, has a 10-week internship this summer beginning in mid-June at a women's health organization in Midtown. Since her budget is tight and ours is a 1-bedroom apartment, she is prepared to shuttle back and forth every day from Westchester County, where we have extended family--but I would love to have her closer by! Please contact Jenny at 651-245-9456 or jennifer.gage@gmail.com if you have any room for Meredith, perhaps in exchange for some babysitting or the like. Thanks!

OLD AOL-BASED CHURCH ADDRESSES WILL NOT WORK AFTER MAY 31.

PLEASE BE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR E-ADDRESS LISTS AS FOLLOWS:

To simplify communications with the web world, we are finally changing our e-addresses to standard business formats, using first initial + whole last name + church domain name. For example:

Rev. Phelps                 sphelps@firstchurchbrooklyn.org

Rev. Waltemath          bwaltemath@firstchurchbrooklyn.org

Victor Forde, sexton   vforde@firstchurchbrooklyn.org

Although emails will get through to our church administrator Anne Solages at an e-address formed on the formula of her name +church domain name, Annie suggests we use  info@firstchurchbrooklyn.org for all office contacts.

Messages sent to Amy Neuner, Wil Smith, and Sunday School Director Elizabeth de la Garza Vargas with the new addresses will be forwarded to their personal addresses, which have not changed.

Amy Neuner               aneuner@firstchurchbrooklyn.org

Wil Smith                    wsmith@firstchurchbrooklyn.org

Elizabeth de la Garza Vargas  edelagarza@firstchurchbrooklyn.org
