At FPC: Garden Party Grande Finale & Meagan Manas Preaching

THIS SUNDAY, August 30:

10 a.m. Summer Worship

Through Labor Day Weekend, Summer Worship Services will at start 10 a.m. Worship Service resumes at 11 a.m on Sept. 13.

 

Meagan Manas will preach a sermon called "Standing Still." Meagan, member of First Church since March, is a 2008 graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and a candidate for ordination in the Presbyterian Church. She is the communications director for Presbyterian Welcome and works on women's issues at the National Council of Churches.  In her free time she loves eating local food and spending time with her husband of one year and two cats, Marge and Arthur.

Sept 6 (10 a.m.): Dr. Ingrid Reneau, a missionary specializing in access to education and peacemaking in the Sudan.  She is sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA).  

 

Sept 13 (11 a.m.):  Rev. Dr. Paul Smith.  HOMECOMING SUNDAY.  Start the fall at FPC off with a warm welcome to our beloved pastor emeritus, Dr. Paul Smith, and to all our friends we've missed over the summer.  

 

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

 

There will be no 10 o' Clock Hour during the summer. We will resume September 13 with a Q & A for prospective PNC members about the workload that serving on the committee will entail. (August is the perfect time to write your statements of interest.  Do not delay.)

Women for Women Bible Study and Justice Focus Group:  Empowering women and children can lead to world peace or so wrote the NYTimes Magazine on Sunday, August 23, 2009.  Join other women at our church as we educate women in other churches about the needs of women throughout the world.  If you are a young woman (18 to early 30's for our purposes J) you are invited to participate in a group this fall.  We will study the connections between faith and action, exploring the issue of obstetric fistula, a condition that plagues women without access to obstetric care and leads to their ostracization.  Check out http://www.endfistula.org/living_with_fistula.htm or read last week's NYTimes magazine for some more info).  This is a pilot curriculum that we will be helping to evaluate and develop for the National Council of Churches.  We will meet after church for about an hour and a half on Sept. 13, 27, Oct.11, and 25.  Please contact Meagan Manas at mmanas@ncccusa.org if you would like to attend or need more information!

 

 Flea Market at First Church:  An after-services sale books and other items has netted more than $300 to benefit Touching Tiny Lives (TTL) and other FPC-supported charities. Become a donor or buyer (or both!) by bringing books to sell to church on Sunday, and staying after to shop. Assisted by Rev. Charles Monaco. Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and Sat. Sept. 12, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Please let us know when you plan to attend.

TONIGHT: Final Summer Music Series Concert

The final Summer Music Series, tonight, Thursday August 20, features Jami Jackson performing in the Peace Garden at 7 p.m. Join us for a great night of music to close out a spectacular 2009 Summer Music Series. Refreshments will be served.

THIS SUNDAY, August 23:

10 a.m. Summer Worship

Through Labor Day Weekend, Summer Worship Services will at start 10 a.m. Worship Service resumes at 11 a.m on Sept. 13.

This week, Elder Mario Adorno will preach a sermon called "Life, Love and Chocolates." Mario, his wife Bernice, and daughter Christina came to First Presbyterian Church in the spring of 1998 and Mario became a member of FPC a year later. He was ordained as a deacon in the fall of 1999, and later was ordained as an Elder and served on Session, as well as on the most recent Pastoral Nominating Committee. Mario is no stranger to the FPC pulpit; particularly in summer. He says, "It is always an honor to serve FPC in whatever capacity. "I just want to do what Jesus asked us to do, serve and our blessings will come from God our Father."

Bertilla Baker on Broadway - The Broadway Inspirational Voices, of which Bertilla Baker, our choir soloist, has been a member for many years, has just recently acquired its not-for-profit status, and is currently seeking someone who can write grant proposals. There might be some pay involved, but the choir, which for more than ten years has been raising money for people in the performing arts community who are living with AIDS and for women with serious health issues, is looking for someone who can do this work pro bono. Last Days of Summer Series

THIS FRIDAY, August 14: Garden Party will be hosted by co-Clerk Edna Asknes. Stop by for a little R&R, light refreshments and fellowship from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Relax in the peacefulness of the FPC Garden - the perfect way to wind down after a hot, humid week.

 

THIS SUNDAY, August 16:

10 a.m. Summer Worship through Labor Day weekend, Summer Worship Services will at start 10 a.m.

 

This week, Elder Larry Picard will preach a sermon called "Trusting the Darkness.  Larry came to FPC Brooklyn in September 2000 as a paid soloist with the choir. Sometime later, he joined as a member, was ordained as an Elder and joined Session. As Chair of the Music and Worship Committee, he serves on the Executive Board of the church and invites your questions regarding the music and worship experience. He also had the privilege of co-chairing the most recent PNC and invites your questions regarding that experience as well, particularly if you are considering putting your name forward for the next PNC. Larry shares his life with his partner of 23 years, Sam Gindin.

 

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

 

There will be no 10 o' Clock Hour during the summer. We will resume in Fall.

 

Sunday School: We continue our summer series of "Veggie Tales" this week. 
Children are invited to worship with all of us until the sermon, then meet upstairs in the Rose Room with our new teacher, Laura Koenig.

THIS SUNDAY, August 9:

10 a.m. Summer Worship through Labor Day weekend, Summer Worship Services will at 10 a.m.

 

This week, Rev. Charles Monaco will preach a sermon called "Seeking God is a Two Edged Sword".  Rev. Monaco is an ordained Interfaith Minister who has worked for over 15 years therapeutically with groups and individuals using music, movement, and mental imagery.  Rev. Charles is also the facilitator for our Life and Loss Grief Group at FPC.

 

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

 

There will be no 10 o' Clock Hour during the summer. We will resume in Fall.

Baseball Game for families: Our 3rd Annual Summer Youth & Family Baseball game will be on Saturday, August 15th, at Keyspan Park in Coney Island Brooklyn.  PLAYBACK THEATRE  is a free workshop introducing this participatory improvisational theater for, teaching techniques to enhance  spontaneity, expressiveness, self-awareness, musicality and collective decision making.  Open for anyone 15 years and older.  Facilitated by Susan Metz - MS in Ed & MFA in Writing Poetry Graduate of the School of Playback Theatre (2006) with 10 years of experience teaching Playback.  Assisted by Rev. Charles Monaco.  Tuesdays: 8/11/09 and 9/8/09 from 6:30 to 9 PM, Sat. Sept. 12, 3to 5:30 PM.  Please let us know when you plan to attend
