Position Open on the Church Wide Nominating Committee

The Church Wide Nominating Committee seeks to replace one member of the committee, Edna Askes, who is now Co-Clerk of Session.  Please contact any committee member listed below to express your interest in serving on this committee.  The description of the role and work of the committee is as follows:

The members of the Church Wide Nominating Committee are elected by the congregation.   They must be members of the church and cannot be current members of session.

The committee thoughtfully and deliberately considers members of the congregation to serve in two possible areas:  as elders on the session or as members of the Pastoral Nominating Committee.  The committee proposes elders or PNC members so that the resulting body will reflect the diversity of gender, ethnicity, and age of our congregation. The committee talks with any of the members of the congregation who express interest or who are suggested by other members and then proposes a candidate or slate for  vote by the congregation.

Current committee members: Jon Abernathy, Chair, Bernice Adorno, Nate Dudley, Marta Nelson

The congregational meeting to elect the member of the Church Wide Nominating Committee will be May 31, 2009.   Please let one of these committee members know of your interest by May 24th.

Formation of New PNC

The Church-Wide Nominating Committee seeks expressions of interest from congregation members interested in serving on the new Pastoral Nominating Committee.   The Committee has a position description for potential committee members; it will be distributed by e-mail, and hard copies will be in the Narthex starting Sunday May 10.. The description will be sent to members by mail as well.  Please prayerfully consider service on this very important committee.   Interested members should submit a one-page statement of interest detailing (1) the history of your involvement in the church, (2) why you are interested in being a part of the PNC, and (3) what you believe you could contribute to the PNC.   This statement should be no more than one page, and may or may not be typed. Deadline for statements:  June 7, 2009.  Statements may be emailed to fpcpnc@aol.com or sent to the Church office, c/o Jon Abernethy, chair of Church Wide Nominating Committee.

Final Pastoral Letter - May 2009

May 4, 2009

Dear Brothers and Sisters –

As my last days with you were approaching these past few weeks, many of you have asked me how I was feeling. Each time, all I could say was: "Many things" or "It's hard to put into words."

Well, after the wondrous times of celebration with so many of you these past several days, two new responses have stirred within me: "I am very grateful." "I am excited."

I am grateful more than I can express for the opportunity these past 2½ years to have served as your interim pastor. I am grateful for the ways that together we have continued the vision of this church's ministry framed by Dr. Paul Smith and others before him. I am grateful for the tremendous expressions of love and challenge you have extended to me throughout my tenure in ways that have strengthened me as a minister and as a person.

I am deeply excited about you. Your incredible courage, passion, commitment, willingness to be honest even when it is uncomfortable, and readiness to love when it is challenging that I see deepening has given me great joy and excitement as I envision what you will continue to do together. I am confident that you will be reaching people who need to see, hear, and know God through you. Brooklyn Heights and beyond are blessed because of how you witness God's love. Your commitment of time, talent and finance is vital to the outreach of this witness.

Rev. Beth Waltemath, Clerk of Session Marcia Smith, and Minister of Music Amy Neuner, Sexton Ernie Salvi, and Church Administrator Annie Solages have been wonderful colleagues in ministry. And I know that they will continue to serve as great leaders along with incoming Clerk of Session Edna Asknes, Session, and each of you.

Special thanks to Patty Watwood for donating her time and talent to paint such an amazing portrait of me. I am humbled by the invitation for this portrait done and by the excellence of Patty's artistic skill. Thanks to each of you for your wondrous expressions of love and for your prayers. Your generosity of spirit goes with me.

Several things will be happening simultaneously during the next few months: (1) Rev. Beth and the Session will be working with the NYC Presbytery to secure a temporary pastor for the next phase of the interim period, (2) the Mission Review Committee will lead the congregation in finetuning the congregational vision of the pastoral leadership that best matches this congregation, and (3) the Church-Wide Nominating Committee will be requesting members to serve on a new Pastoral Nominating Committee. Shortly, you will hear more about each of these next steps from Rev. Beth and the various committees involved.

As I proceed to a new opportunity that God has given me to serve, and I am confident that the Stamford congregation and I will also do great ministry together. Any insight, compassion, and leadership that I bring to First Congregational Church of Stamford are strengthened by my experiences with you.

I will always hold you in my heart and in my prayers,

Rev. Dr. Cari Jackson

When we enjoy the delight and the adventure of life's travels, when we…relish the vistas of new truth, there is a new country waiting for us. Other News:

Adult Ed/Spiritual life will feature a series for four Sundays in June called "Searching for a Pastor the Presbyterian Way,"  led by Meagan Manas, Paul Mowry, Nancy Talbot, Sarah Wiles, who have graduated seminary and are seeking ordination through the Presbyterian church.

Continuation of Pastoral Search Process. Watch for information from the Church-Wide Nominating Committee (CWNC) about the formation of a new Pastoral Nominating Committee. Also watch for information about opportunities to give your input about your vision of the church and what you are seeking in a pastor. This will not be a repeat of the Mission Review process, but an effort to fine-tune the process, in order to guide the work of the new PNC and in light of additional insights gained through the first leg of the pastoral search.

STEPPING UP to SERVE and LEAD.  Please consider how you can heal and affirm the work of the church community and to reach out in love to each other and the world through volunteering your time in the coming months as we begin a new phase of transition.  We have many ministries that need organizers, regular and occasional volunteers.  We will be sending a dedicated email about volunteer opportunities and contact information of their organizers next week.  Sign up as soon as you can and face our challenge and the Spirit's calling of us into greater authenticity as a community of faith with the act of love for "love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." (1 Cor. 13:7).
